I'll just talk about some things I expected out of the book, knowing the reputation that the original Tobira intermediate textbook has come to be known for. For those who are unaware, many regard Tobira's intermediate textbook to be really challenging for textbook learners, in a good way. Also it's filled with readings on various interesting real world topics, and many describe it as the most interesting Japanese textbook and for some, the beginning will feel like being thrown into the deep end.

I didn't expect Tobira Beginning to be much more difficult than the competition, since it's a foundational volume. Though I did expect and hope for it to have engaging passages and less fluff in its explanations. Toward the latter half of Tobira I, the grammar points become much more lengthy, nuanced, and dense. That's not to mention that on the website there's supplemental grammar explanations and videos for the points laid out in the book. There's a dialogue at the beginning of every chapter and a reading at the end of every chapter that incorporates these points and some of the vocab, and the end-of-chapter readings are often interesting and about some Japanese custom or cultural aspect. Sometimes they aren't that interesting, not gonna lie. I completely understand that with the limited vocabulary of a complete beginner it's unavoidable that we'll need to cover the absolute boring basics, I'm just saying! If you've flipped through or used Genki, the readings are pretty comparable to Genki's reading and writing section.

Okay I:ve completed about 40% of the workbook for tobira beginner 1, The workbook is a LOT of hiragana practice with very little actual word learning for the first 40 of 124 pages. unfortunately nearly 100% of my time with the workbook so far has been writing hiragana and katakana while not really reflecting what is in the textbook. the first reading practice happens about 33 pages into this 124 page book. then it immediately returns to katakana writing practice. the second reading practice, the one for chapter 2 happens on page 55, halfway through the workbook. unfortunately all my time with the workbook so far has been purely writing review with 1 page of reading review. which is all well and good, but it doesn:t really give an opportunity for you to write things in your own words until quite far into the workbook. It looks as though the workbook ACTUALLY starts closer to page 60, as that is when real content appears. e24fc04721
