Green, yellow, and red come in many forms. There are more than 16,000 Toastmasters clubs in the world, and nearly that many types of timing signals. The simplest option is a set of colored cardboard cards, like the Toastmasters Timing Cards. Some clubs have literal flags, made from painted dowels and colored felt, which the timer waves wildly in the air and then displays in a wooden stand.

A web-based timer is available from the Agenda menu of a Toastmasters meeting agenda and pulls in data from the agenda such as the names and speech timings of speakers or contestants. For online meetings, you can use this tool to show a timing lights effect as a background image. However, that does require the use of additional software such as OBS Studio to select a web page or portion of a web page as a source image, as explained below.

To use the timer, you choose the name of the speaker from the Speaker/Speech Type list or choose one of the other options, such as Table Topics, or Speech (8-10) for an 8 to 10-minute speech by a speaker who was not added to the agenda on the website.

Click Start to start the timer or Stop to stop it (or to reset everything). You can also click the Green, Yellow, and Red buttons to manually trigger a color change. The Correction drop-down list allows you to make an adjustment, for example if you started the timer a few seconds late (try not to do that).

A member who is allowed to upload images can upload additional colored images to be used with the timer. The list of images available for this purpose in the Timer tool is limited to those that have the color names (green, yellow, and red) in the file name or the title assigned in the media library.

I am currently administrating government meetings via Zoom webinar. Public Comment needs a 3 minute timer and frankly the board members do also. Our meetings are broadcast over the public television station and a fb page. It would be great to have an integrated timer the speaker and all panelist see, but maybe not the audience.

Meanwhile, I managed to find a workaround and I'm sharing what worked for me below; I hope it can help your club as well. Using this method, I only have to focus on starting and stopping my timer at the correct moment.

The TimingLights.net automatic timers will do the job, and they have the polished, professional look. The drawbacks I see with this one is that 1.) the $300+ price seems too expensive for most Toastmasters clubs, and 2.) I would have liked the lights brighter than those appear to be.

When timing part of the meeting, keep your preferences panel open so you can change the background color to reflect the status of the time remaining. Your face will appear with your chosen color behind it.

Before the COVID-19 pandemic, we used a timing device with three bulbs: one green, one yellow, and one red that the timer turned on at the right time. However, since we are in virtual mode, with the Zoom software, we can no longer use this system. People who took on the timer role improvised coloured objects to display on-screen. We saw peppers, lemons, bananas, firefighter helmets and boxes as timer props, which demonstrates the great ingenuity of the members. We also saw situations caused by technical difficulties.

You can switch your display between the active speaker and gallery view showing all attendees. Gallery view looks a little like the old Brady Bunch TV show opening. You can choose to hide non-video participants from the gallery view so that your screen shows only the people on camera. When someone is speaking, switch to speaker view to give them your full attention. The speaker should remain in gallery view so that they can see the timers indicators and the applause/jazz hands

The video operator and timer roles are combined into the Zoom host role. We are testing out different approaches to timing. The host can run a timer app with audio notification and email the results at the end of the meeting. To get the attention of the speaker, we could also send a poll entitled green, yellow and red.

If you hold themed Toastmasters meetings, it is a wonderful opportunity to encourage attendees, members, guests, and role players alike to dress up according to the theme! You could also use a graphics editing tool like Adobe Illustrator or Canva or even Powerpoint to create a custom themed Zoom background which will really liven up your Zoom meetings and add a pop of colour to your Zoom meetings. ff782bc1db
