I am proud to participate in the TNG Challenge!
I am raising money for seniors and adults living with disabilities in our communities. With an aging population, rising seniors poverty and dwindling social safety net, our seniors programs remain a cornerstone of our work at TNG and an important investment for more just, equitable city.

Helena
Helena maintains her independence and a healthy diet thanks to Meals on Wheels
“I live close to a major intersection but when it comes time to go grocery shopping, the physical distance feels as wide as Lake Ontario due to my impaired mobility and vision.”
For people who are ill or disabled, and seniors like Helena, Meals on Wheels is essential. The service allows people to maintain their independence and live in their own homes. Delivered six days a week, meals accommodate people’s special diets, including those with diabetes, compromised kidneys and heart disease.
Contact with volunteers is the only social interaction some people have during the day. At each visit, volunteers spend a few minutes to ensure that everyone is well, and inform staff if additional help is needed.
During COVID-19, the service was even more vital for Helena. “This is the first time since I began receiving Meals on Wheels nearly a decade ago, that I truly feel helpless from the isolation. Meals on Wheels provides not only meals. It provides hope.”
Mary
Services like our Adult Day Program and Client Intervention & Assistance help seniors like Mary live happily and independently
“When I first moved to my new seniors’ apartment building, I felt lonely and isolated. I was employed but on sick leave and was not sure how I could pay my rent. The superintendent told me The Neighbourhood Group could help. Staff listened to me and were comforting. They explained the process and how they could help me until my apartment was adjusted for rent geared to income. Before my sick benefits ran out, they helped me apply for my private and senior’s pensions and prepare my income taxes.
“Throughout that time, I wanted to keep busy and see people so I wouldn’t be so lonely. The Neighbourhood Group already had a day program in my building, so I started going. It made me happy to meet new friends in my building, do chair exercises to stay fit, have homemade lunches and learn new things in the engaging programs. There’s a painting class, yoga, holiday celebrations and day trips.
“I am very grateful to live in my seniors' building and be connected to the staff who are always helping me and supporting me. Time goes by fast every day and I am not lonely anymore. The Neighbourhood Group has truly been a lifeline that keeps me and many seniors happy and active. Thank you!”
Mrs. Quan Wing Yee: Pui Hong
Mrs. Quan Wing Yee gained more than she expected in the Pui Hong Chinese Senior program.
Between work and family, Mrs. Quan Wing Yee was always busy. But retirement left a void in her life. “I felt I had nothing to do all day long. My home was close to the Pui Hong Chinese Seniors program, so I started to attend and it’s changed my life.”
Celebrating its 30th Anniversary in December 2020, Pui Hong helps seniors improve their mental and physical health right from the start. Whether it’s assistance with applications and referrals, Chinese and Canadian holiday celebrations, exercise like Tai Chi and line dancing, or simply the opportunity to socialize and connect with others, Pui Hong offers something for everyone. For Mrs. Quan, Wing Yee, the fun activities and wonderful people were the only motivation she needed.
“I don’t sing Cantonese opera or Chinese period songs like some of the other seniors but I really enjoy seeing them perform. I do the morning exercises and play games, and my favourite is the day trips. One of the staff encouraged me to volunteer in the kitchen preparing lunch for the other members. I enjoy cooking a delicious Chinese lunch for non-Chinese seniors. They really look forward to this. I never imagined I would learn more about cooking from the other volunteers. Volunteering gives me a sense of accomplishment and satisfaction.
“Pui Hong has become another home for me and the staff are like family. I am very happy I can contribute to this family so that my life can still shine brightly.”
