TONY NEWTON BIO

Not too long ago, the world of music found a revelation in Tony Newton, a virtuoso hailing from the historic city of Detroit, Michigan. Tony took keen interest in the art of music right from the days of his childhood. At the tender age of 7 years, his passion for music drew him closer to the piano. Although Tony is highly adept in playing musical instruments like saxophones and keyboards, there is no denying the fact that he has carved out a niche for himself in the field of electric bass. Newton officially launched his bass guitar career along with the likes of esteemed blues musicians, such as John Lee Hooker, T-Bone Walker and Little Walter then moving on quickly to Motown. Tony has sealed a permanent berth for himself in the souls and minds of music lovers not only across the USA but also in different parts of the planet by recording on over 100 hit recordings with innumerable world-renowned artists, including Tony Williams Lifetime, Smokey Robinson, Stevie Wonder, Michael Jackson, Supremes, Allan Holdsworth, Gary Moore's G-Force, Robbie Krieger of the Doors, Aretha Franklin, Mamas & Papas, Chuck Berry to name a few.

FEBRUARY 2020 – Music Review - Tony Newton’s ‘STS’ By Brett David Stewart

If ever there was an independent music artist to come across my desk with an eclectic and remarkable career spanning many decades, it would be Tony Newton. The revered bassist and musician began his career in his early teens, performing with the likes of John Lee Hooker and T-Bone Walker. He would later go on to perform with the vast majority of Motown’s legendary lineup. Newton is prolific solo artist, too, and his latest endeavor is ‘White Light Collection.’ Let’s delve into the first single from this musically innovative album, ‘STS – Stop That Shit.’

Newton’s Motown roots are immediately apparent on #STS a lengthy nine minute excursion through his thunderous style of bass performance. It has a slick, cinematic style to it that’s scored with searing electric guitar, bass, and keys solos, cataclysmic string sections, and waterfalls of bombastic percussion and backing vocals. Much like Motown, it’s sharply produced and immensely suave, but never sterile or inauthentic.

As a lead vocalist, Newton handles himself well, bantering back and forth with a group of female vocalists in playful fashion. His singing is as funky as the rest of his jam, and if ‘STS’ can’t get your foot tapping or your feet moving, you might want to see a doctor. Lyrically, the single takes aim at those who only want to benefit themselves, often at the cost of those around them and future generations. “Stop That Shit,” Newton croons funkily as he points the finger at a “bad cancer” of society - those with endless greed.

Through and through the performances on ‘STS’ are excellent! It’s very rarely to receive a nine minute song in the indie music community that achieves the near-impossible: being consistently compelling to listen to. This tune does that, however, and you’ll find yourself spinning ‘STS’ on repeat. It’s indicative of ‘White Light Collection’ being an album very much worth picking up next month when it drops.

Tony Newton is putting his talent to good use. He cites the likes of Marvin Gaye and John Lennon and how their messages have been lost in society in the years since their deaths. Newton would likely know this better than some, given he actually performed with the former. He’s very much right, too, and songs like this don’t come out often enough anymore. Give ‘STS’ a spin and get excited for ‘White Light Collection;’ an absolutely intriguing record. - Tony Newton’s ‘STS’ By Brett David Stewart – JukeboxPodcast.com
