If you want a lighter, corrosion-resistant aluminum carrier that handles moderate loads with ease, choose TMS 500; if you need maximum storage volume and heavy-duty steel construction for larger gear, choose RIGMEC Hitch Mount Cargo. This choice isn't about which brand has better marketing or more hype online; it is strictly about matching the physical specs of the basket to your specific hauling needs. For senior drivers who value stability and ease of loading without wrestling with excessive weight, the decision becomes even more critical because the wrong carrier can turn a simple trip into a back-breaking chore.
• TMS 500: Built from rugged, anodized aluminum with a compact 49-inch length, offering a high strength-to-weight ratio but less total floor space.
• RIGMEC Hitch Mount Cargo: Constructed from heavy-duty steel with a massive 60-inch footprint and deep side rails, providing superior capacity at the cost of added weight.
• Who picks TMS: Buyers prioritizing rust resistance, easier handling, and a slightly shorter profile for tighter vehicle clearances.
• Who picks RIGMEC: Shoppers needing extra cargo room for bulky items like kayaks or large toolboxes and who have a Class III or IV hitch receiver.
The TMS 500 stands out immediately because of its material composition. While many carriers on the market default to painted steel that can eventually rust or chip, this unit utilizes extruded, anodized aluminum. That distinction matters in real-world scenarios where you might be storing wet gear, driving through winter slush, or parking near salt-heavy environments. The anodized finish provides a natural layer of protection against corrosion, meaning the silver finish stays looking clean longer without needing frequent touch-ups or maintenance.
Its dimensions tell a clear story about its intended use. At 49 inches long, 22.5 inches wide, and 8 inches high, it offers a solid platform for standard luggage, duffel bags, or small camping equipment without extending too far beyond the rear bumper of most vehicles. The 8-inch height is particularly notable for keeping the center of gravity relatively low while still providing enough vertical clearance to secure items with straps. It fits perfectly into a standard 2-inch hitch receiver, making it compatible with a vast array of SUVs and trucks.
However, this carrier has a distinct trade-off regarding raw load volume. If you are a senior driver looking to transport golf bags, a few suitcases, or light outdoor gear, the TMS 500 is an excellent match. It is easy to assemble, attaches securely, and the aluminum construction makes it significantly lighter to lift onto a ramp or off the ground compared to steel alternatives. You should skip this model only if your primary goal is to haul oversized, bulky furniture or extremely long recreational equipment that requires more than 49 inches of linear space.

The RIGMEC Hitch Mount Cargo Carrier is designed for those who need every inch of available space they can get. Its most defining feature is the sheer size of the platform, measuring 60 inches in length and 22 inches in width. That extra 11 inches of length over the TMS model translates directly into the ability to carry longer items, such as fishing rods, long boxes, or awkwardly shaped tools that simply won't fit on a shorter rack. The overall height is 7 inches, and the design includes high side rails that act as a safety barrier, preventing smaller items from rolling off during transit.
Construction-wise, this unit leans heavily on durability through mass. It is built from high-quality steel materials, including a dedicated steel under support frame and side rails. This steel framework is engineered to handle significant stress and wear, making it ideal for road trips where the carrier will be subjected to constant vibration and heavy loads. The manufacturer specifies a 500-pound capacity for evenly distributed cargo, ensuring that whether you are carrying heavy equipment or recreational gear, the structure remains stable. The compatibility extends to Class III and IV hitch receivers, which are common on heavier-duty trucks and larger SUVs, offering versatility across a wide range of vehicle types.
The trade-off here is primarily weight and potential maintenance. Steel is inherently heavier than aluminum, which could make installation and removal more physically demanding for some users. Additionally, while the steel is described as durable and resistant to wear, it does not have the same inherent corrosion resistance as anodized aluminum unless it receives regular maintenance and care to prevent rust over the years. This product is perfect for someone who needs a workhorse carrier for hauling large amounts of gear and doesn't mind the extra heft. However, if you are a senior driver who finds lifting heavy steel difficult or prefers a setup that requires minimal upkeep regarding rust prevention, the RIGMEC might feel less convenient despite its impressive capacity.
• Best for corrosion resistance → TMS 500, thanks to its anodized aluminum build which naturally resists rust without paint chipping.
• Best for maximum storage length → RIGMEC, with its 60-inch length allowing for significantly longer items than the 49-inch TMS model.
• Best for ease of handling → TMS 500, as aluminum is lighter than the steel construction of the RIGMEC, reducing strain during assembly.
• Best for structural rigidity on heavy loads → RIGMEC, utilizing a dedicated steel under support frame and heavy-gauge steel rails.
• Best for lower profile visibility → TMS 500, with its slightly taller side rails (8 inches) but shorter overall length potentially reducing aerodynamic drag and blind spots.
• Best for Class III/IV vehicles → RIGMEC, explicitly marketed for compatibility with Class III and IV receivers for maximum towing power utilization.
• Best for seniors seeking lightweight gear → TMS 500, offering a balance of strength and manageable weight for easier loading and unloading.
• Best for bulky, irregular shapes → RIGMEC, where the 7-inch side rails and larger footprint provide better containment for shifting loads.
In my opinion, I would recommend the TMS 500 for most everyday users, and specifically for senior drivers who prioritize ease of use and longevity. The combination of anodized aluminum and a manageable size creates a carrier that is durable enough for serious hauling but light enough to handle without fear of injury. While the RIGMEC offers more square footage, the extra weight and the need for ongoing rust maintenance make it a more burdensome choice for general use. If your priority is a "set it and forget it" solution that looks good and lasts, the TMS 500 is the smarter investment.
Yes, the TMS 500 uses extruded, anodized aluminum which naturally resists corrosion, whereas the RIGMEC is made of steel that may require regular maintenance to prevent rust over time.
The RIGMEC Hitch Mount Cargo is longer at 60 inches compared to the TMS 500's 49 inches, making it the superior choice for transporting longer items like ladders or fishing poles.
Both models are designed to fit standard 2-inch hitch receivers, though the RIGMEC is explicitly noted for compatibility with Class III and IV receivers for heavier applications.
