TLF SHARE Collective is in solidarity with the global movement celebrating International Women’s Day. We celebrate women’s achievements in civil, political, social, economic, and cultural rights. These achievements show the incredible resistance made by women throughout history. They symbolize how women continuously fought for a society that must foster equality, equity, inclusivity, and accountability.
TLF SHARE emphasizes that the women’s rights movement comprises women of different backgrounds and experiences. For instance, transgender women historically fought alongside other women in demanding States and governments respect, protect, and fulfill women’s rights.
While we celebrate our women’s rights wins in the Philippines, there is still much work to do to see how these wins change peoples’ lives. In the context of transgender women, we emphasize that these women are continuously minoritized, marginalized, and excluded from many forms of women’s well-being and care. The non-recognition of their experiences and identities is the primary roadblock to achieving a genuine win for equality.
We are one with the movement and the Philippine government in achieving a truly gender-equal and inclusive society. The latter, however, must show its support and recognize the different communities of Filipino women in all aspects of our civil, political, social, economic, and cultural rights. Protect transgender women from continuous harassment and violence, institutionalize transgender health, and pass the SOGIESC Equality Bill to protect women of diverse sexuality and gender from discrimination and abuse.
