Adali Evora is a 19-year-old Tiefling monk who was raised in a monastery near the coast of Luskan. It's not entirely clear how or why she was brought to the monastery— her parents were presumably both Tieflings and wanted to ensure young Adali was raised in a positive, encouraging environment rather than growing up surrounded by the negative & violent stereotypes Tieflings often face in society. So, a middle-aged human monk took her in and eventually became her greatest champion and mentor. Other young monks still treated her differently, though, and somewhat unkindly at times. But she was happy with her life there. She researched great astronomers and religious figures of varying backgrounds. She read hundreds of books about history, alchemy, and the mysterious ways of the four elements. She was particularly drawn to water but had not yet harnessed her Ki abilities enough to influence the water around her. But sometimes, she walked down to the stream that passed through the entire town and dipped her feet into it, imagining the history it carried.
When Adali turned 18, however, her then elderly mentor died. She felt abandoned and lost without his guiding presence. On his deathbed, her mentor gave Adali a handwritten letter from her parents that had been left with her as a baby. She had so many questions— were her parents “evil” Tieflings who abandoned Adali because they simply didn’t want her? Were they trying to protect her the best they knew how? Are they alive somewhere? After her mentor died, Adali realized how out of place and unwelcome she now felt at the monastery. As time passed, she started to feel anger and resentment growing inside her more and more. Feeling frightened of these new emotions, without telling anyone, Adali decided to leave her only home to go explore the world and possibly find her parents. She set out alone— scared, but hopeful.
Because of her relatively secluded life in the monastery, Adali has not seen much of the “outside world” or experienced the true cruelty it can offer. She is a bit naive and socially awkward because of this. She is used to feeling peaceful and good, but is unprepared for how others might see her and how it might affect her. She could likely become quite powerful if she wanted to, but eventually she will have to face the whole "nature vs. nurture" question. Is evil in her blood? Can she break stereotypes and bring peace to those she meets? Can she remain good even when the world is afraid of her? Could she find her parents?
