Dear SLO Coastal Community,
In January, we learned that our schools are facing significant budget challenges.
But there is reason for hope–if we work together.
Our Assemblymember, Dawn Addis, has authored Assembly Bill 1391 (AB 1391). If passed, this bill will provide full state funding for TK programs in all Basic Aid school districts (funded by property taxes), like San Luis Coastal Unified. Currently, Basic Aid districts receive zero state dollars to fund TK, despite TK being mandated as “universal” across the state.
AB 1391 ensures that EVERY four-year-old in California will have access to Transitional Kindergarten, regardless of where they live or how their school is funded. But this isn’t just about TK.
AB 1391 could benefit EVERY student in our district, from TK-12th grade. TK funding would be secure and guaranteed for future years, allowing our district to focus its funds on other grade levels and vital programs.
We need your help to move AB 1391 through the Education, Appropriations and Budget Committees to reach the Assembly floor in Sacramento. We will make our voices impossible to ignore. We will invite other Basic Aid communities to join the chorus. We will flood the inboxes of Assembly members with letters of support written online, in pen, or with crayons.
How You Can Help:
Step 1: Submit a letter of support to the Chair of the Assembly Education Committee, the Honorable Al Muratsuchi, through the CA Legislation Position Letter Portal.
Here are video tutorials demonstrating how to create your profile and submit your letter, as well as written instructions. The process will take about ten minutes. Please ensure you submit your message by the deadline of April 23, 2025.
You can use one of these pre-written templates or write your own message:
Step 2: Share this with at least three other families or friends. Post to your neighborhood group, text it to your circle, or spread the word on social media using #TK4ALL.
Step 3: Send a quick thank you note to Assemblymember Addis for prioritizing our youngest learners. It takes just a minute using this link.
Together we can ensure that EVERY four-year-old in California gets the start they deserve. Let’s go!
