Students in our learning lab get the chance to explore difficult ideas through augmented and virtual reality, which turns abstract lessons into experiences they can actually step into. These tools allow learners to move through interactive environments that go far beyond what a textbook or slideshow can provide. My goal was to identify AR and VR options that support real learning, align with NGSS and social studies expectations, and remain affordable for our school.
To reach that goal, I selected three tools that match our needs well. Delightex, formerly known as CoSpaces, paired with Google Cardboard gives students the opportunity to design digital models and then walk through them using simple VR. This has worked especially well in our Jamestown settlement project because students view their creations from the inside and make purposeful revisions. Space 4D Plus flashcards give students an AR astronomy experience by bringing planets and stars off the cards and helping them understand scale and movement. Google Arts and Culture adds free virtual tours that allow students to experience historical places as if they were standing there in person.
Together, these tools spark deeper thinking, build confidence, and keep curiosity alive as students explore and make sense of the world around them.
