What actually happened?: Lincoln would not concede. He chose to go to Gettysburg and say a few remarks designed to inspire the doubters to hang in. He said that we most resolve that those who died here shall not have died for no reason. This speech was probably the best in U.S. History and it ultimately led to Lincoln’s re-election and the “finishing of the work.”
