Now Raleigh is looking to recruit more settlers for Virginia to try again.
The Time Machine takes place in a London tavern, where students portray English people of all walks of life considering going to Virginia. Each student will either 1) create a composite character with online helps that give them names, occupations, religions, socio-economic status, etc; or 2) adopt the role of an assigned person from the era.
During the Time Machine prepare to do each of the following:
1) Identify yourself by
NAME
RESIDENCE
OCCUPATION
SOCIAL CLASS
FAMILY MEMBERS
RELIGION
2) State your opinion on voyaging to Virginia.Â
What have you heard about it?
What have you heard about the voyage?
What have you heard about the natives?
What would motivate you to go or stay one way or the other based on your station in life? What are the pros and cons of each decision?
How does your social status, your religion, and your gender impact your choice?
What do you suspect is the future of Virginia?
This Time Machine is designed to help students to understand what type of person would be most likely to migrate in a primogeniture and feudal system.
Here are your principal options:
1) stay put in England with no opportunity for land or gold
2) sign up for the next voyage as an indentured servant
3) sign up to be one of the Queen's Sea Dogs
