All students are assigned to an actual Jamestown settler, to research their bio and portray their perspective and interests. Three students represent the Powhatans: Pocahontas, Opechancanough, and Powhatan. Students must share their perspective of a dearth of gold, starvation, malaria, and the prospects associated with Tobacco. Relations with the natives are the most crucial and complex dynamics to explore.

From the English: What should be done about the Indians? Friendship? Hostility? Slavery? Conversion? Marriage?

Indentured Servitude and Slavery
You have discovered Tobacco to be a profitable cash crop. But it takes a lot of workers. What system of labor will you adopt:
1) All classes labor 2) You bring poor people to America in exchange for 7 years of labor 3) Indian Slavery 4) African slavery
What to do with George Kendall (Spanish Spy?)
George Kendall is suspected of being a Spanish spy. A fellow colonist accused him. What should you do with Kendall? Find him not guilty because of little evidence. Find him guilty and execute him. Find him guilty and give him corporal punishment.
What to do about hunger?
You do not have enough food for the colony. Most of your men feel too good to hunt. One man has chosen to kill his wife and eat her. He was caught. What should happen to him?
The hurricane in Bermuda
A ship bound for Jamestown encountered a hurricane in the ocean. The passengers found safety on the island of Bermuda. The rebuilt a ship and came to Jamestown the following year. A man named Stephen Hopkins, who was on that ship, organized a mutiny on the Island against the leader. You now have control over Hopkins. What should happen to him? (Shakespeare wrote about this event)
How to memorialize Bartholomew Gosnold
One of your leaders, Bartholomew Gosnold has passed away. What should you do with his body? Bury it inside the fort so that the Indians do not notice. Cremate it. Bury it outside the fort with a display of arms for the Indians to see.
Gold
You thought that when you arrived in America
you would find gold everywhere. You have
not been so lucky. You have found hunger,
mosquitoes, Indians, and illness. What should
you do about gold? Give up on it? Keep looking?
Role of Women
You realize that you will not have a permanent colony in America without women. The task for women, however, is incredibly hard and most do not want to come. How will you entice them?
