Indian Removal

During this time machine, students go to the outdoor classroom for a Tribal Council. All of them are assigned to be Cherokee who have resided in the region of Newnan, GA for many many years. Now they are faced with a dilemma perpetrated by President Andrew Jackson. They have three principal options:

1. Be removed to Indian Territory beyond the Mississippi (Oklahoma)

2. Assimilate into American Citizenship

3. War against the English

They discuss the pros and cons of each of these, usually recognizing that there is no good solution; every member of the Tribal Council offers their opinion and in conclusion their chief (the eldest) decides their fate.

The principal objective of this exercise is to help students understand the difficult and unjust challenge that Native Americans faced (and, in many ways, continue to face).
