What actually happened?: Colonel Chamberlain did not evacuate the hill. He ordered his men to “fix bayonets” and try to defend the hill. Bayonets are knives attached to the end of a musket that turns it into a spear. This surprised the Confederates and ultimately preserved the high ground and the battle. It was very very close to being a disaster.
