Officially, Confederate leaders committed treason. They engaged in insurrection and rebellion. The normal punishment for treason was execution. The leading Confederates included Jefferson Davis, Robert E. Lee, and Alexander Stephens. Many in the North cried out for prosecutions, convictions, and executions.
