HAMPTON ROADS CONFERENCE

• It is 1865. The Confederates seem to be almost out of steam.

• The Vice President of the Confederacy, Alexander Stephens, wishes to meet with Abraham Lincoln to negotiate peace.

• Lincoln agrees to the meeting that takes place at Hampton Roads, Virginia

• Vice President Stephens offers the following agreement:

The Confederate States of America will surrender, dissolve, and rejoin the Union. All violence will cease. Their condition is that Lincoln must rescind the Emancipation Proclamation and continue to allow for slavery in the Southern States as he promised to do when he was first elected
