• Allegedly John Wilkes Booth planned the assassination of President Lincoln in the boarding house of Mary Surratt. John W. Booth and Mary's son were friends.

• Surratt denied any knowledge of the conspiracy, although she did not deny that Booth came to her house often. She had been in sympathy with the Confederacy
