It is summer 1864. You (General Burnside) are attempting to pierce into Richmond, Virginia, the capital of the Confederacy. This would almost certainly end the war.
You have not had much success as a commander in this war. You were embarrassed at the infamous Burnsides Bridge at Antietam and even more embarrassed at Fredericksburg. You'd like to redeem your reputation.
Lee's army is defending Richmond at a location outside the city known as Petersburg. It has been a standoff and a stalemate for weeks.
Some of your men from Pennsylvania were coalminers before they joined the army. They have tremendous experience at digging tunnels and using explosives. They make the following proposal to you:
"Let us dig a tunnel underneath the camp of the Confederates. Then we will place massive amounts of explosives under it and lay an lengthy fuse back to our lines. Then we will light the fuse and it will destroy a huge portion of the Confederate Army. As a follow up we will immediately charge and destroy or capture any troops that survived the blast."
