What actually happened? Lincoln ignored his advisors' advice to abandon Fort Sumter. Why? Two main reasons.
He did not want to concede that South Carolina was no longer part of the United States
If there was going to be a war, he wanted the Confederates to fire the first shots, so that he could have the moral high ground as being the defender, not the aggressor
