What actually happened?: On November 5, 1862, Lincoln fired McClellan, and replaced him with General Ambrose Burnside, perhaps an even worse leader.
McClellan swore revenge. He pursued it by running against Lincoln in the next presidential election. McClellan's campaign promise was to make peace with the Confederacy and end the bloodshed. Lincoln was convinced in the summer of 1864 that McClellan would win because the people were so tired of war. But Lincoln's call at Gettysburg to dedicate ourselves to finish the work that the dead started overshadowed McClellan's promises of peace.
