Upset over the election of a man who appeared to be an abolitionist (Lincoln), twelve Southern states, beginning with South Carolina, have made the choice to secede. (Even though Lincoln promised not to interfere where slavery already existed).
To secede means to leave a larger nation, break off and form another new nation. The Southern States formed a nation they called the Confederate States of America (CSA).
DECISION: As the new president, in order to avoid war, should you allow the Southern states to form their new nation? To disallow it will likely result in a bloody war that you may be held responsible for. And if you do not allow the secession, what will be your reasoning? You have already stated that you never intended to abolish slavery in the South, so slavery cannot be your explanation.
