Body found at Perth Retail Park after major fire

A body has been found at a Perth retail park during investigations into a major fire cheap tiles Perth.

Investigators confirmed last week they believed someone was inside the B&M building when fire broke out in the early hours of Saturday, August 24.

Around 50 firefighters tackled the blaze at the building, which also housed a pet shop and tile store.

Perth and Kinross Local Area Commander, Chief Inspector Ian Scott, said: “As communicated at the end of last week, our inquiries gave us reason to believe that there may be a person within the building. Our investigation into the fire has therefore been conducted with this possibility in mind.

“Formal identification of the body found has yet to take place, however, we believe that we know the identity of the individual, and specialist officers are providing support to their family at this time.

“The damage to the building is extensive and we are working closely with the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service and other partners to establish the full circumstances. We will maintain a police presence at the scene until the investigation is complete. This may take some time and I would like to thank the local and business community for their support.

“Some disruption in the immediate area is unavoidable while work is ongoing at the site, and there will be no pedestrian access between Glasgow Road and Morrison’s until the area has been made completely safe. We would like to thank local residents for their patience and understanding.”

KordaMentha's Craig Shepard said SWC had tried to improve sales and revenue but its plans were not working.

"The [Christmas] timing's awful, it was a real shock," he said.

"Staff didn't expect it, management's been pursuing a turnaround plan, they've been making some really good inroads and achievements dealing with some legacy contracts which were unprofitable, but really it's just run out of steam."

Mr Shepard said the lack of cash meant administrators were left with no choice but to terminate all the staff immediately.

He added if nobody could be found to take over the business soon, the closure could have flow-on effects to the business's customers, including major construction projects in Melbourne's CBD.

"Obviously this week is the week that the building industry finishes up on Friday but when they come back in the new year, hopefully we've got a solution for them," he said.

The group's creditors will meet on December 31 to determine whether the company will go into liquidation.
