District 5
CULTURAL CENTER STATION
Overview
This project focuses on developing a unique typeface for the upcoming "Trung Tâm Văn Hóa Quận 5" (District 5 Cultural Center) station of the Ho Chi Minh City Metro system. The assignment required creating a typeface that reflects the personality of the chosen station/district while incorporating characteristics of a selected Design Icon.
The goal was to bridge the identity of District 5 with the design principles of the chosen icon, resulting in a functional and expressive typographic solution for the new metro station.
Chosen Station: Trung Tâm Văn Hóa Quận 5 (District 5 Cultural Center)
District Personality: District 5 is a vibrant and bustling area, renowned for its historical Chinatown (Chợ Lớn), lively street life, unique food courts, and particularly its lantern streets, which are significant cultural symbols, especially during festivals. The area represents a blend of tradition, commerce, and constant activity.
Design Icon: Alan Fletcher
Icon's Significance: Alan Fletcher was chosen for his influential design work, particularly his expressive, free-handwriting, and often playful typographic style. His approach often embodies freedom, boldness, and a departure from rigid structures.
Connection: Fletcher's dynamic and freehand style was seen as a fitting reflection of the energetic and somewhat chaotic atmosphere of District 5. His design philosophy allows for capturing the hustle and unique character of the area.
Core Concept: The central idea was to merge the visual identity of District 5, symbolized by lanterns, with the freehand, expressive calligraphic style of Alan Fletcher.

Sketch & Ideation
The assignment required the development of three distinct typeface concepts before selecting the final direction. This phase involved exploring different ways to visually translate the characteristics of District 5 and Alan Fletcher's style into letterforms. Considerations included:
Paradigm: Balancing function/practicality with experimentation/expression, leaning towards Fletcher's expressive style.
Grid System: Evaluating whether a strict grid or a more organic approach (inspired by Fletcher's freehand work) would be suitable. The final design suggests a more organic approach.
Visual Elements: Experimenting with incorporating the lantern motif and Fletcher's characteristic bold, contrasting strokes.
Typeface Name: (Implicitly named after the station) Trung Tâm Văn Hóa Quận 5 Typeface
Description: The final typeface draws heavily on Alan Fletcher's freehand calligraphic approach, featuring bold, energetic strokes with distinct variations in weight, reflecting the dynamism of District 5.
Key Feature: The iconic District 5 lantern is integrated into the letterforms. Lanterns are placed seemingly randomly on different letters, embodying the freedom characteristic of Fletcher's style.
Visual Effect: When the letters are arranged together, the lanterns create a visual rhythm, reminiscent of the famous lantern streets of Chinatown in District 5. This directly links the typeface to the location's identity.
Medium: The final execution appears to be digital, fulfilling one of the allowed mediums. Each letter is designed within the specified A5 constraint.
Color: The design is presented in black and white, focusing on the form and structure of the letters and the integrated lantern motif.

Alan Fletcher
IN VIETNAM
Overview
The core task was to explore the manifesto and significance of a chosen Design Icon (Alan Fletcher, previously researched) and imagine their reaction to contemporary Vietnam (specifically Ho Chi Minh City in 2022).
The goal was to create a visual "crossover" piece, merging the icon's style and philosophy with observations of Vietnamese life, demonstrating an understanding of typography, color, and composition.
Design Icon: Alan Fletcher
Manifesto/Significance: Fletcher is known for his wit, visual intelligence, playful approach to design, and interest in everyday culture (pop culture). He often employed collage, handwriting, and bold compositions, focusing on clear communication and the viewer's reaction. His work blends graphic design with art, often challenging conventional boundaries.
Filtered Aspects for Project: Fletcher's use of collage, his witty/playful tone, his interest in street-level visual culture, and his focus on message and composition were key elements considered for this assignment.
Contemporary Vietnamese Context:
Initial Research: Explored various facets of Vietnamese life, including sidewalk culture, markets (like Ben Thanh), traditional elements (Ao Dai), and urban phenomena (traffic, coffee culture), as suggested in the brief.
Chosen Focus: The ubiquitous, often visually jarring, classified advertisements (specifically "hút bể phốt" - septic tank pumping, and similar services) found plastered haphazardly on walls and utility poles in urban areas. These were selected as a distinct feature of the contemporary Vietnamese visual landscape.
Imagined Impression: It was hypothesized that Alan Fletcher, upon encountering these ads in Vietnam, would be perplexed by their chaotic, arbitrary placement and design, yet potentially intrigued by them as a form of raw, unavoidable street-level communication – a kind of unintentional pop art.
Crossover Concept: To create a visual piece imagining Fletcher's commentary on these classified ads. The piece would adopt his methods (collage, wit) to re-contextualize the ads, turning their visual noise into a deliberate design statement.

Sketch & Ideation
Scenario Exploration: Considered different scenarios for Fletcher's interaction with Vietnam (e.g., visiting landmarks, experiencing traffic) before settling on the theme of classified ads.
Conceptual Development: Focused on how Fletcher might process and respond to the visual "pollution" of the ads. The idea emerged to use the ads themselves as the raw material for a Fletcher-esque piece.
Technique Experimentation: Explored collage as the primary medium, aligning with Fletcher's known techniques. Experimented with compositions using images/textures of the ad-covered walls as a background. Investigated using cut-out letters from magazines or other sources to create a typographic message overlaying the chaotic background, providing contrast and commentary.
Medium: A3 Poster (2D Print)
Description: The final poster utilizes a collage technique. The background is a dense composition mimicking walls plastered with numerous real examples of Vietnamese classified ads (primarily "Hút bể phốt," "Cho vay tiền"). Over this chaotic base, large, colorful letters cut from different sources spell out "A CLASSIFIED".
Typography, Color & Composition:
Typography: The main typographic element ("A CLASSIFIED") uses bold, sans-serif letterforms cut from various sources, creating a vibrant, slightly uneven, handcrafted feel reminiscent of ransom notes or Dadaist collage, fitting Fletcher's playful style. The typography of the background ads is authentic, raw, and repetitive.
Color: The background relies on the inherent (often faded) colors of the ads and the walls. The foreground letters introduce bright, contrasting colors, drawing the eye and adding energy, reflecting Fletcher's use of color.
Composition: The composition is deliberately busy and layered, reflecting the visual overload of the subject matter. However, the large central text provides a focal point. It embraces the chaos but frames it within a design context.
Alignment with Fletcher's Style: The poster embodies Fletcher's wit (commenting on the ads), use of collage, integration of found graphic elements (the ads), and a colorful, impactful visual language.
