Just two days later, the funeral for Melisa Park, Jennifer’s friend and co-worker was held. Jennifer was still distraught over finding her in that state before she died. The group of 6 once again sat together in one of the front pews of the church. During the service, Jennifer went up to the pulpit and delivered a powerful eulogy honoring her friend and colleague who was gone too soon.
After the service finished, the group went to the coffee shop where a memorial was set up outside honoring Melisa. Jennifer once again reiterated her love for her friend and colleague in a shorter eulogy, and then went inside with the others to have some refreshments and continue the celebration of life.
‘I’m still in shock that she’s gone, but it’s something I have to live with now,’ said Jennifer. Dominic added, ‘She was a good friend to you and to the rest of us. I’ll never forget the dodgeball to the crotch moment.’ The group laughed together on hearing Dominic’s remarks.
As soon as the group finished the refreshments and discussion on Melisa’s life, Willa excused herself to head home. She told the others that she had things to discuss with her mother. After she left, the others began to discuss what was going on. Jonah said, ‘I wonder if she needs to talk about just life in general,’ whereas Dominic replied, ‘I wonder if its about what we had heard the other day from Felicity regarding Max’s father.’ Noemi asked, ‘What about Max’s dad?’ Max reiterated what Felicity had told them regarding the death of Max’s father Xavier.’
During the discussion at the coffee shop, Willa returned home. She said,‘Mom, we need to talk.’ Felicity replied, ‘What do you want to talk about?’ A now inquisitive Willa asked her mother, ‘Mom, be honest with me. What exactly happened to Max’s father?’ Felicity’s face began to droop with discomfort. ‘Don’t cherry-pick what to say, because I know you’ve been hiding secrets from me,’ Willa finished her statement.
‘Xavier was such a nice man, and to be honest with you, Willa... I saw him the night he died,’ said Felicity. She continued, ‘Your father actually hated the man, and so did John and Yasmin.’ Willa’s face turned to one of shock and disgust. ‘What the hell did Dad do to him?’ asked Willa, now filling with rage. ‘I couldn’t look because I was feeling so heartbroken for Xavier, now losing this fight with your father. I still need therapy,’ said Felicity. Willa asked, ‘What did Dad do?!?’ Felicity took a sip of her tea, and then said, ‘Your father helped kill Xavier. I couldn’t look because of so much guilt of seeing this horrific event take place.’ Willa, now angry with her mother said, ‘And you kept this from me my whole life?!?!? How the fuck did Dad do it?’ Felicity, now filled with guilt, said to her daughter, ‘I didn’t see anything because I went back to the car, but I heard gunshots. Multiple gunshots, and your father shot at least two of them.’ Willa, now furious, stormed off to the barn, refusing to talk to her mother further.
Once in the barn, Willa texted Dominic telling him to come home to talk. He replied, ‘On my way’, and left the coffee shop and drove back to the house. Once in the barn, Willa screamed at the top of her lungs, ‘MY FATHER HELPED KILL MAX’S DAD!’. ‘Whoa, calm your tits. What happened?’ asked Dominic, now confused. Willa replied, ‘My dad helped shoot Max’s father to death. My mom told me that your parents may have had some involvement.’ Dominic was now filling with sadness, hearing that his parents kept a secret from him for most of his life. ‘Did your mom do anything?’ he asked. Willa replied to him, ‘She was so guilty and heartbroken that she didn’t do anything to him. She sat in the car when it happened.’
The duo, now filled with sadness and rage, went back inside to talk with Felicity further. Dominic walked over to the living room and asked Felicity, ‘Do you remember who all was there except you, your husband, and my parents the night that Xavier was killed?’ She replied to him, ‘If I remember correctly, I believe that Winston and Charlotte might have tagged along. I’m still not sure why they were with us that night.’ Dominic, still filled with sadness, asked her another question, ‘Why did you and my parents keep this from us this whole time? I trusted my parents to tell me the truth no matter what, and they lied to me up until the day they were murdered.’ Felicity, now crying, replied to him again, ‘We all felt so guilty for doing something so horrendous. It’s scarred me ever since, because I never wanted my future children to know that their father committed such a heinous act of violence against an innocent man.’
Dominic and Willa, now knowing the answers they needed, went back to the barn and began to discuss what further information that Felicity provided them. Willa was still infuriated with her mother over something that could have been prevented. Dominic made her a Hot Pocket and began to ask her, ‘Who are Winston and Charlotte?’ Willa, now confused, replied, ‘I have no idea, but they must be related to the group in some way.’
Dominic then texted Felicity saying that he and Willa were staying in the barn for the night, and that the two of them would talk with Noemi in the morning. The two promptly fell asleep on the two sofas situated inside.
