Both options serve the same fundamental purpose of expanding your vehicle's storage, but they approach the challenge of hauling heavy loads in harsh conditions with distinct design philosophies that will dictate which one fits your winter driving needs best.
• Thule Pulse 2: Its biggest strength is the versatile dual-side opening and the integrated torque indicator that ensures a secure fit without guesswork, while its trade-off is a slightly more compact footprint compared to some bulkier competitors. This pick is ideal for commuters who value quick access and precise installation feedback.
• PM PERFORMOTOR Rooftop Cargo Carrier: Its biggest strength lies in its heavy-duty construction designed to withstand UV rays and road debris with a textured finish, paired with a dedicated key lock for security, though it lacks the dual-sided convenience of the Thule. This pick is perfect for travelers prioritizing maximum weather protection and a rugged aesthetic on longer cross-country trips.
The Thule Pulse 2 is engineered for the driver who values efficiency and ease of use above all else. With a generous 400 liters of cargo space, this roof box is built to handle the demands of weekend escapes and daily commuting without feeling cumbersome. The standout feature here is the dual-side opening capability, which allows you to access your gear from either side of the vehicle. This is a critical advantage when parking in tight spots or navigating narrow garages where you might not be able to pull up perfectly centered next to a curb.
The build quality relies on durable ASA-ABS plastic, a material chosen specifically for its ability to resist sun damage, scratches, and harsh weather elements. This isn't just about looking good; it is about ensuring the box remains structurally sound during those slippery winter months when salt and ice are constantly battering your vehicle. The forward position of the box is also a deliberate design choice, allowing for full trunk access with minimal risk of the cargo box interfering with opening the rear hatch. You can still reach your trunk contents even when the roof is loaded down with skis or snowboards.
Installation is handled through a simple, tool-free system that includes a torque indicator. This small detail provides peace of mind by clicking once the mounting hardware is tightened to the correct specification, removing the anxiety of whether the box is secure enough for highway speeds. However, you should skip this model if you require a larger internal volume than 14 cubic feet or if you prefer a locking mechanism that uses a separate key rather than an integrated latch system. It is a premium tool for those who want reliability and smart engineering over raw size.

The PM PERFORMOTOR Rooftop Cargo Carrier targets users who prioritize durability and security in their rooftop storage solution. Designed with a textured black finish, this carrier is built to look rugged and blend seamlessly with various vehicle styles, from SUVs to EVs. The primary draw here is the heavy-duty ABS plastic construction, which is explicitly marketed as impact-resistant and capable of withstanding harsh weather, UV rays, and road debris. If you live in an area with frequent hail or drive on gravel roads often, this textured shell offers a layer of protection against cosmetic wear that softer materials cannot match.
Security is another major pillar for this product. Unlike some competitors that rely solely on friction latches, this carrier comes with a key and a dedicated locking system. This ensures that your valuables remain safe whether you are parked overnight at a trailhead or driving cross-country. The lock also helps maintain proper lid alignment, preventing wind noise issues that can arise if the seal isn't tight. The aerodynamic shape is another key feature, designed to reduce fuel consumption and wind noise, making the ride smoother and quieter even when carrying a full load.
The lid opens to a width of 14 inches, providing ample room to maneuver large objects inside. It is a universal fit for vehicles with factory or aftermarket cross bars, including most trucks, sedons, and crossovers, provided you verify your roof type before ordering. It is the choice for the adventurer who wants a fortress-like storage solution that stands up to the elements.
