After completing 92 game sessions over which I ran 56 miles and burned over 10,000 calories, I rolled the credits on Ring Fit Adventure (RFA). I took me a year to complete the game, with a several monthlong break, spanning its its 23 worlds and 100-plus levels. I first purchased the game in Covid lockdown (like so many other people) as an attempt to try to get back into the habit of exercising. On top of my local gym closing, I had recently been diagnosed with an arthritic condition making general movement more and more difficult. Hoping RFA would be a low bar of entry to regain some mobility, I started with 15-20 minutes active sessions (about 40 minutes in real time), I gradually increased the difficultly to 25 (max 30) where I found a comfortable balance between flexibility and what the game was asking of me. Many of the weeks booted up RFA in the morning and began a routine. I fell off the wagon several times, but eventually pushed through to get to the end of the game. I really enjoyed 80% of what the game threw at me, with a good balance between physical skills and enough 'game' to play to make it feel less like a chore and more like an RPG. There were a few times when the tasks were too difficult or strenuous to complete, and a few side missions where the timing seems a bit off (and I still haven't completed them). But there's a lot to praise here. It's the kind of game great for someone unfamiliar with gym routines and just wants to move around a bit. The hardware is surprisingly accurate and the ring provides a good amount of resistance after the difficulty is raised over 20. The length of the game is also impressive with 40 hours of content in the first play through. Of course, there is a robust post-game with another 46 words to conquer, but I may have to save that for another time. As of now I'm excited to get back to it and start tackling the post-game and some of the smaller tasks I missed in my first play through.
