Her Story is a desktop detective FMV game where the player filters through dozens of clips from police interviews to put together the story of a crime. Set in the 1990s, the whirring of tower and the curvature of the CRT monitor act as environmental set pieces for combing the through VHS records of a 30-something Hannah Smith (Viva Seifert) as an off-screen detective asks questions concerning her life and the death of her husband. The player scans through the database of these tapes by searching for words spoken in the interviews. The system seems strangely limited for the player, as only the first five results are able to be accessed, but as for a gameplay mechanic, it works well forcing the player to think around the story and query several important names and terms to understand what is really going on. I played this game with my partner, both of us sitting on the couch discussing the case and searching for new leads, and I think that's the most enjoyable way to play these kind of games. To act as the investigator Ă la Sherlock Holmes Consulting Detective and to bounce ideas off your co-investigator(s) adds an important aspect to the simple mechanics presented. After 100 minutes or so, we thought we had wrapped up the case and explored a few more paths to confirm our multiple personalities hypothesis. For its conclution, the game boldly asks if you are satisfied with what you have learned. Then it simply ends. At first, I was slightly frustrated with no definitive answer or quiz at the end to test my knowledge, but I've grown respect the choice of the developer. With the (partially) ambiguous story it tells, a few reasonable conclusions can be draw (even if one of them is far more satisfying) from the information provided. I had an entertaining time with this game, and as a whole, it was an enjoyable story to put together in an evening without overstaying its welcome.
