Materials Needed:
Worksheet one per student
Small whiteboard one per partnership or scratch paper one per partnership
Large class whiteboard
Markers
Directions:
As students enter the room, assign each student either an "X" or an "O." You can use different colors of worksheets to help visually sort them into pairs. Each "X" student needs to find a partner who is an "O." Each pair should have their own worksheet and a whiteboard/scratch paper with a tic-tac-toe grid drawn on it.
To start the game, both partners will tackle the same math problem simultaneously. The first partner to finish with the correct answer gets to make the first move in their tic-tac-toe game. Repeat the Process. This continues until one partner wins the tic-tac-toe game on their whiteboard. (It's possible to win in just three questions if they answer all of them correctly before their partner.) Once a student wins the tic-tac-toe game at their table, they must immediately run to the large class whiteboard, which has a large tic-tac-toe grid drawn on it. The student will place their “X” or “O” on the big board (for example, if I am an “X” and beat my partner, I would run to the big board and place one "X" on that board).
The game continues with other pairs until one group has successfully won on the large class board. Students can move the previously played pieces by their team on the large board. Example: If we had two in a row and then the other team blocked us. I can put a new piece in play or I can move one of our two pieces already on the board to an open space. Students keep playing until they have completed their assignments or until their group has won on the big board.
FAQs and Tips:
If you plan to play multiple times, cut out large Xs and Os and put magnetic tape on the back. Then they can be reused time and time again.
