Materials Needed:
1 Connect Four board (PowerPoint template)
Connect 4 dots (these can just be whiteboard markers or magnet circles precut for this game.)
Worksheet one per student
Directions:
Divide the class into teams that correspond to colors. You need to have dots or markers for each of these colors. Project the template on a whiteboard if possible. Students will work individually on their assignments. Once they finish and problem and check it off, they go to the giant board and place a dot of their color. The goal of the game is to get the MOST 4-in-a-rows. Once they place a dot they go sit back down. (If they are using colored whiteboard markers, they will just color a dot.)
The game continues with different students going and placing dots for their team trying to get 4-in-a-row. You can set class rules regarding “floating pieces”. In regular connect 4 if you play a piece it will drop to the bottom of the board. This version is harder and recommended for older grades. If you teach younger students, it might just be easier to allow floating pieces. If someone accidentally plays a floating piece, I slide it down to the bottom of the column. When the time is up the team with the most 4-in-a-rows win.
FAQs and Tips:
There are TONS of options you can use for the dots/pieces. Suggestions- different colored post-it notes, different colored expo markers, cut-out circles on cardstock and use magnetic tape to create playing pieces.
