Materials Needed:
Worksheet for all students
Giant dice or inflatable dice
Game piece for every team
Directions:
Display the PowerPoint on the board and divide the class into up to 7 teams. Each team is assigned a different tower from the template, and you can use either group numbers or tower colors to help students easily identify their team. Place a dice at the front of the room on the floor. Each team should place their game piece at the base of their assigned tower, starting below the first square rather than on it.
Students may work individually or in groups depending on your preference. When a student answers a worksheet question correctly, their team earns a chance to roll the dice. After rolling, they move their game piece up the tower the number of spaces shown on the dice, then return to their seat to continue working on questions. The goal is for each team to collaborate and race to the top of their tower faster than the other groups.
A key rule is that teams must roll an exact number to land on the top square and win. If a team rolls a number that would take them beyond the top square, they must “bounce back” the extra spaces starting from the bottom of the tower and continue moving upward from there. For example, if a team is three spaces away from the top and rolls a five, they move up the three spaces to reach the top, but still have two spaces left from their roll. Those two remaining spaces must be used starting back at the bottom of the tower.
The first team to land exactly on the top square is the winner of the “Race to the Top of the Tower.”
FAQs and Tips:
You can buy inflatable dice on Amazon. We use this pack.
Recommendations for "game pieces" can be just an expo marker, a post it note, a laminated circle with magnetic tape on the back, a picture of flynn rider with tape on the backside of him, etc.
The gameboard has spots for a maximum of 7 teams but you can always play with less than that.
