Directions:
Divide the class into teams of 2–3 students. Each group works together to complete the assigned problems. After finishing a problem (or a set, depending on difficulty), they earn the opportunity to come to the board and test their luck. When it’s their turn, the team selects a numbered box. Each box hides either a point value or a leprechaun. If they reveal points, those points are added to their total for that round. They can then choose to bank their points—locking them in and protecting them—or continue testing their luck by opening another box. There is no limit to how many boxes they can open in a turn. However, if they reveal a leprechaun at any point, they immediately lose all points earned during that turn and must return to their seats with zero for the round.
For example: A team opens one box and reveals 2 points, then opens another and reveals 5 points, bringing them to 7 total. They can choose to bank the 7 points, or risk it again. If they open another box and hit a leprechaun, they lose all 7 points and end the turn with nothing.
The game continues as teams work, earn turns, and weigh risk versus reward. At the end, the team with the most banked points is crowned the winner!
FAQs and Tips:
About 25% of the boxes are leprechauns. Points values are 10, 5, 2, or 1. Easy numbers to add.
Make them write down their points per round to help keep track. I have them write it in the corner by the problem they just did but they can also keep track on a scratch paper.
