Materials Needed:
Worksheet one per student
Timer
Answer key one per group
Raffle tickets or small pieces of paper/money
Directions:
Divide the class into groups of four. Each student in the group will need their own worksheet. The goal is to "be the teacher" when payday arrives! Starting the Game: All students begin by working on their assignments. They can tackle the problems in any order they choose. As soon as a student believes they have the correct answer, they must come to you, the actual teacher, and have their paper checked. (This is the only time they will check in with you.) Once a student gets their assignment checked off as correct, they return to their group and take on the role of "teacher." They will flip their assignment over and grab the answer key. As the teacher, they are NOT allowed to work on their own assignment. Their responsibility is to help their fellow group members, just like a real teacher would. The "teacher" will walk around the table, checking off other students’ answers. If another student finishes a problem, they check in with their table teacher. If the answer is correct, the student flips their paper over and takes the answer key, becoming the new teacher. If the answer is incorrect, the table teacher must assist them, just like a real teacher would.
The game continues with students switching roles between teacher and student at their table. As this happens, set your timer randomly for intervals between 3 to 8 minutes. When the timer goes off, the student with the answer key at each table gets “paid.” You will hand them a raffle ticket. (Depending on class size, you may distribute around 8 tickets each time the timer goes off.) After handing out tickets, reset the timer for a new random duration, and the game continues. The student who has the answer key keeps it until someone else takes it from them through the game. At the end of the class or when the allotted time for this activity is up, all students will place their raffle tickets into a bin. Draw one ticket, and that student will win the grand prize! (This could be a fruit snack, a small bag of chips, or another fun treat!)
FAQs and Tips:
