Materials Needed:
Plastic spoons for every group
Deck of content cards one per group
Directions:
Prior to starting, create cards using the template provided. Then divide your class into groups of 5-6 students. They will need spoons but one less than members in their group, similar to musical chairs. Have the groups sit in a circle with spoons arranged in a circle between them equidistant from everyone.
To start the game, deal everyone 4 cards. Determine who will be the “draw” person. That person will draw a card and discard a card. When they discard they will pass to the right. The person sitting to the right of them will pick up that card, determine which of their 5 cards they want to discard and discard to the right. This continues with everyone getting a new card and choosing what to discard. Nobody should EVER have more than 5 cards in their hand at a time.
The game becomes fun when someone gets 4 of a kind. Example: They get 4 cards that all describe the same vocabulary word. When they get 4 of a kind they quickly grab a spoon from the middle of the table. If anyone sees a spoon get taken they want to immediately grab a spoon.
Eventually, all the spoons will be taken and one student will be left without a spoon. The person who took the first spoon must show their cards and verify they have 4 of a kind with the group. If they did, the person without a spoon lost and must stand up and move to a different group. If they were wrong and grabbed a spoon without having 4 of a kind they must move to a different group.
Once someone has left the group and someone new has joined the group you shuffle, deal, and start a new game.
FAQs and Tips:
The person to the left of the “draw” person will be the last person to get a card. When they discard there is nobody to pass to. They should just start making a stack of all their discards. There is a chance you go through all the cards before someone gets 4 of a kind. If the “Draw” person runs out of cards they will start drawing from the discard pile the person to the left of them has created.
Students should be discarding face down and not directly handing it to the person next to them.
