Materials Needed:
Pie Face Game (A few games is even better)
Whip Cream
PowerPoint Template with questions
Recording sheet one per student
Dice
Cleanup Materials (wipes, paper towels, tablecloths to cover the ground)
Directions:
Setup the Pie Face game. It helps if you cover the floor with a plastic tablecloth and the table. Make sure to set up some paper towels near the game. Start by dividing the class into tables. (Be SURE to make sure someone at every table is willing to get “pied.” I let my students pick their own seats this day but be specific someone has to get pied at every table. The same person can be pied over and over, or they can switch off) Then pass out the recording sheets.
The game starts by projecting a question on the board from the PowerPoint. It shows how many “turns” of the game there are, harder questions are worth more. Each student answers the questions/solves the problem on their recording sheet. Then the table must come to a group decision on the final answer. The teacher then picks a random table to answer the question. (You can pick table numbers out of a hat, use a dice, random number generator, decide on a piece of paper beforehand, etc.) If the table gets the answer right, they get a choice- anyone can choose to be “pied” at their table, or they can sabotage another table. If they sabotage another table, someone from that table must be pied. Again, every table must have someone who is okay with being pied. The same person can be pied multiple times if they choose. If the table answers the question wrong, then someone from that table MUST be pied.
The person being “pied” walks up to the machine, puts their face in the hole, and turns the dial the number of times the question specifies. (The Pie Face game requires a random amount of “turns” before the hand flings up and hits you with whip cream.) If they get “pied” then give them a few seconds to clean up. If they don’t get pied, they just return to their seat and the game continues. Then you click on the next slide and start again with a new question. This repeats until you are out of time or run out of questions.
FAQs and Tips:
If someone turns the dial and doesn’t get “pied” …. Be sure to clear the whip cream and put it fresh for the next person. Otherwise, it melts and splatters for the next person causing chaos.
If you get more than a machine you can involve more people. When I have multiple machines then I call on multiple tables to answer each question. Then they all pick another table or themselves. It works great and gets more exciting.
Allow the kids to have someone record them getting pied. Students posting about school on social media…. HOW AWESOME. Don’t stifle their excitement.
