Materials Needed:
Projector and Screen
Optional: pencil and scratch paper for every person
Directions:
This is a game in which students guess how much money it would take their friends to do absurd things. It can be played with any number of students and can even be played over Zoom. Project on the screen the PowerPoint template provided. It will have a prompt displayed on each slide. For example: “How much would it take for you to wear wet socks for 24 hours?”
Whole Class:
Call on one student to think of their minimum dollar amount it would take for them to complete the task on the board (this is just pretend, no one is actually completing the task.) Tell the student to just think of their dollar amount (or secretly write it on a paper) but not to say it out loud. After the student has their dollar amount in mind, call on 4-5 students to guess the first student’s number out loud. Once everyone has guessed the ORIGINAL person shares their dollar amount. The student who guesses closest to the original number, wins that round. That student gets a point and the game continues with a new task from the PowerPoint. Pick a NEW student and continue.
Group Activity:
Divide the class into tables or groups. 6 people is great. Pick one person at every table to start. Display a question on the board. Have the person you picked, from each table, write down how much it would take for them to complete the absurd task. Give like 30 seconds. While they are writing have everyone at their table write down a prediction for how much it would cost the student at the table. Example: Wyatt is the person the teacher chose. Everyone at Wyatt’s table is writing down a prediction for how much it would take for Wyatt to complete the activity. Have the student reveal their answer and the closest guess at the table gets a point. This continues with a new person the next round.
FAQs and Tips:
Set a time limit to determine a dollar amount. Each round should last less than a minute to keep it engaging!
This is discussion based. Have them explain their answer after. It is SHOCKING what kids are willing and not willing to do. (And their reasoning is even funnier!)
REMINDERS: TO EDIT ANY OF THE TEMPALTES YOU WILL FIRST NEED TO DOWNLOAD THEM TO YOUR COMPUTER. NOBODY IS ABLE TO ALTER THE ORIGINALS AS THOUSANDS OF PEOPLE USE THEM. ALL POWERPOINTS ARE MEANT TO BE USED IN POWERPOINT AND NOT GOOGLE SLIDES.
