Directions:
Students play individually in this game. Each student needs to receive a numbered item (golden token) but don’t want to share their number with others. Setup the bins, like the picture shows to the side. The 4 buckets in a row in front and then the 2 different buckets in a line behind them. Start by telling students at the end of the game, you will draw 1 token from each of the 4 buckets in front. Whoever that token belongs gets a treat. They obviously want their token in one of those buckets at the end of the game, but more importantly they want a small number of tokens in their bucket because then they have a higher chance of winning.
Students work independently on problems/assignments/questions. When they complete one and check it with the teacher, they start with putting their token “in-play” by placing it in one of the 4 buckets in front. Then return to their seat. On their next turn they get to move 1 token- their own or someone else’s. They can move a token into a different front bucket, place a token in the “2-Turns Out-of-Play” bucket, or move their token. Once they move a token, they return to their seat and the game continues like this until the time has run out.
If a token is moved to the “2-Turns Out-of-Play” bucket the person whose token it is must waste 2 turns to move their token back into play. They will move it forward one bucket, to the “1-Turn Out-of-Play” bucket on the first turn, and then back into play on their next turn. It is not announced when somebody’s token gets put out-of-play, they must realize on their own where their token is. They also don’t know whose tokens they are moving since tokens are just numbered which makes it more fun. IMPORTANT RULE: YOU CAN NOT TOUCH TOKENS IN THE OUT OF PLAY BUCKETS UNLESS IT IS YOURS. Those people get the chance, without more sabotaging, to move their token back into play.
FAQs and Tips:
These should not be assigned numbers. It is more fun if they don’t know other peoples’ numbers, so pass out tokens each time randomly. Have students write down their number somewhere to help prevent cheating.
If you want to play an easier version of the game, you can use the “1-Turn Out-of-Play” bucket alone without the 2nd out of turn bucket. I recommend doing this for elementary school.
Depending on the difficulty of the problems you can also have all your students put their token in play before the game starts.
The "out-of-play" bins are optional depending on your grade level.
