Materials Needed:
Table at the front of the class
20 Solo Brand cups (10 of one color and 10 of a different color)
Water
1 or more ping pong balls
Worksheet (Optional)
Directions:
Divide the class into two teams (could be more if you want). On two tables at the front of class setup 10 cups on each table. They should be in a triangle format similar to when you play pool- 1 cup in front, 2 behind that, then 3, then 4 on the back row. You will need to put a little bit of water at the bottom of each cup so they don’t continually fall over. (Like half an inch of water in the bottom of each cup is perfect.) There are multiple versions of this game as described below.
Daily Game:
Students work on an assignment independently. When they answer a question correctly, they get to go shoot. They will walk up to the front across from their team’s color. They can choose to bounce and shoot or just try to sink it. If the ball lands in a cup, they remove that cup for their team. If they miss nothing happens and they go sit back down. The first team to remove all their cups win.
Weekly Competition:
Teams will compete against each other for a week/multiple lessons to earn a reward. For every question their team answers correctly during a lesson they get to take a shot at their cups. A student will go stand behind the line and toss their ping pong ball at the cups. If their ball lands in a cup, that cup disappears. The first team to remove all their cups wins some sort of prize. (This game took my class 11 lessons to finish!) It is a great way to keep students engaged during notes and participating actively.
FAQs and Tips:
I had 7 periods a day and was still able to play. I just kept a paper for each class and marked off which got taken out. Then between class periods I would setup the cups to how their class left them the previous day.
If you don’t like the water in the cups I also used beans like you use for bingo in elementary school and those also worked great.
