Materials Needed:
Chicken Flingers (Dollar Store or Amazon)
PowerPoint template with questions and answers embedded
Masking tape or tape to create a “Fling Line” on the ground
Directions:
Prior to starting, download the PowerPoint template and embed your questions and answers into it. Tape a “Fling Line” to the ground a good distance from the projector screen. Students should divide into teams. We recommend groups of 2-3 students. Explain the rules: Questions will appear on the PowerPoint. Students will be given ___ amount of time to answer the question on their own. When the time's up everyone shows the teacher their answer. The teacher presses the spacebar and the correct answer appears on the board. If they get it correct, they send ONE person from their team to the fling line to fling a chicken. If they get it wrong, they spend the time fixing their mistake while everyone else flings.
Once you determine which teams got the answer right and which teams got it wrong, you go to the next slide on the PowerPoint template and targets will appear. Teams quickly line up at the fling line and shoot their chickens (similar to shooting a rubber band) at the targets. If ANY part of the chicken hits a target the team gets the number of points that are displayed on that target. If they fling and hit no chickens, the round is just a wash for them and they get no points. Multiple teams should be flinging at the same time. If you want to speed this up, set a 1 minute timer and say they must fling within the minute or they can’t fling.
Once every team has flinged, they return to their seats and the teacher displays a new question by changing the PowerPoint slide. The game continues with this process until all questions are finished. The team with the most points wins.
FAQs and Tips:
You can make some questions on an assignment worth more “flings” if they are harder or take longer. That way kids stay motivated.
You can choose to allow everyone in the group to fling for each question or just 1 representative from the group to fling one time. You know your class best, choose what works.
I would only pull out 3 or 4 chicken flingers each time you do this activity. Every group doesn’t need their own! I just put 3 on the table by the Fling Line and everyone uses the same ones. Then I throw them away at the end of the day because they will be dirty from being used so much.
Be sure there is a clear path from the fling line to the targets. You would be shocked at how bad some kids are at flinging and you don’t want anyone to accidentally get hit in the face.
WARNING: Be very clear that anyone flinging them at friends or anything besides a target will no longer get to participate in this activity for the rest of the year. No horseplay!
REMINDERS: TO EDIT ANY OF THE TEMPALTES YOU WILL FIRST NEED TO DOWNLOAD THEM TO YOUR COMPUTER. NOBODY IS ABLE TO ALTER THE ORIGINALS AS THOUSANDS OF PEOPLE USE THEM. ALL POWERPOINTS ARE MEANT TO BE USED IN POWERPOINT AND NOT GOOGLE SLIDES.
