This game is called the “Cheese Touch” from Diary of a Wimpy Kid. Start by dividing the class into tables or teams. (Teams of 3 or 4 work best) These teams need to sit together. Each team starts with a few slices of “cheese” aka post-it notes on their desk. Depending on the problem length/time requirement the number of slices may change. I tend to do 4 slices per table.
In case you are unaware, YOU DON’T WANT THE CHEESE TOUCH. The goal of the game is to get rid of all your cheese the fastest. The first group to have no cheese slices on their table wins. This game can be played as a collective group or individually.
Group Method- The entire group must complete their problem and check it off. If everyone has it correct, one person can move a cheese from their table to another group. The game continues like this with cheese being traded around and around until a table wins. (This version is harder so start with LESS cheese slices. 3 max.)
Individual Method- This version works similarly. Each student works on a problem. When they have one done, they check it off and move a cheese slice. 1 cheese gets moved per person per problem. (Start with more cheese slices in this version. I recommend 2 more cheese slices than players in the group.) The game continues like this with cheese being traded around and around until a table wins.
We also have alternate rules when you are never safe from the cheese touch. You can set a specific time limit. Your team may get rid of the cheese touch in this time limit, but someone can give you cheese and infect you again. The only way to win in this version is to have no cheese when the time ends. This version is MUCH harder so the kids will be rowdier.
FAQs and Tips:
Be sure to set CLEAR rules they students can NOT wait to check off problems. They will try to cheat the game and only move slices when their entire table is ready, so they win easier. Do not let them trick you. If they do not sign off a problem immediately, they forfeit moving that cheese slice. If you are worried about this, sit at a table and make them line up to have you quickly sign off problems to ensure nobody is moving more than 1 or cheating.
Often, you will run out of time before a group gets rid of their cheese. In this case, they are all stinky with the cheese touch. No winners. 😊 Or you can determine that the group with the least amount of cheese wins.
