Directions:
You need to divide the class into groups of 4 or smaller. Each group needs to sit around a table with their Box Off game board in the middle. Each person picks a color and starts with all their colored pegs DOWN. Then pass out the assignment. Explain these directions: The goal is to be the first person to have all your colored pegs flipped UP. After every problem you roll both your dice and then you must flip up a peg. When you roll the dice you have two options: add the numbers together or subtract the numbers. Example: If I roll a 5 and a 3.. Together they add to 8 or they subtract to 2. I can choose to flip an 8 or 2. Sometimes, two dice will be rolled that can only amount to one number on the board. Example: I roll a 5 and a 6. 5 and 6 add to 11, which isn’t on the board, so my only option is to subtract 6 and 5 and flip a 1. DOUBLE 6 ARE WILD!
You originally start by flipping pegs up. Eventually you will roll two numbers and both options are already flipped up. Here is where the game gets fun. You must decide which peg to flip back DOWN. You must flip a peg. You can’t skip a turn. This continues with people flipping pegs up and down hoping to eventually have them all up. Once somebody has them all up, they are the winner.
Sometimes this game goes pretty fast. To help get more practice in, try switching tables. Example: After 1 round have everyone that was yellow move to a different table. Or play a King of the Court version where winners move up a table and last place moves down a table.
FAQs and Tips:
This game is fairly quick so I usually play it with something that I don’t feel I need to check off every problem. I do put the caveat that once you flip all your pegs up then I come check your paper. If you have more than 1 error, you have to restart or continue and fix all your mistakes.
This is by far one of my class favorites. It gets VERY intense. If you don’t want to mixup tables you can always just have them keep tallies on their paper of how many wins they have and then the person with the most wins is the table winner.
