Materials Needed:
Printed Blokus game board one per partnership
2 different colored markers per partnership
Worksheet per person
Directions:
Students should be paired up, and they will play against their partner. Each student needs a different color marker from their partner. Place the BLOKUS Game Board in between the partners and each student should have their own worksheet or task cards. Students begin by working on their paper. After each problem they do, they are able to play one of their “BLOKUS” pieces on the game board by drawing it. After they use that piece, they need to cross it off on the bottom of their sheet. Each piece may only be used once so they must cross them off to keep track. Students do not need to take turns. They play a piece as soon as they finish a problem.
The goal of the game is to be the person who plays the MOST of their pieces. Eventually, as the board fills up it will be impossible to play some pieces so students will be “stuck” or “trapped” and unable to use all their pieces. Example: If I play 8 of my pieces and my partner plays 13, then they win.
Rules for Blokus:
You can play the pieces in any order; however the first piece you play must cover one of the dots on the game board.
Each additional piece you play after that must touch corners with one of your own pieces. Picture shown below.
You keep playing pieces until you no longer have a piece that will fit on the board.
You can rotate pieces or flip them, but they must stay the same shape.
FAQs and Tips:
If you are playing with younger kids, it might be beneficial to make a classroom set of the pieces, so they don’t have to draw them themselves. I would have all the kids cut their pieces out and save them in a Ziploc bag for the next time you play.
I usually print the BLOKUS boards double sided so if a game ends quickly due to error, they can just flip the paper over and play again.
If you have an odd number, there can be groups of 3. Use the 3-person board template and make sure to use 3 different color markers.
