Materials Needed:
(There are two versions, and half the class needs version A and half need version B. There is also a 3-person template if you have an odd number.)
Directions:
Students need to pair up. They will be playing battleship against their partner and should sit across from them. Have everyone start by folding their gameboard in half. (Hamburger style) Then on the top half of the boards everyone needs to hide their ships. They do this by lightly shading in the boxes they want to use. They need to hide a 4 box ship, 3 box ship, and two 2 box ships. Ships can go left to right or up and down but NOT diagonal. Once everyone has hidden their ships the game can begin.
This game does not work in turns, everyone plays at their own speed. Students pick a problem/question from the bottom half of their board to solve/answer. Once they think they know the correct answer they try to attack. They start by saying the box they are answering. Example “B4” then they say the answer. Their partner locates the box B4 on the TOP half of their board and checks their answer. If what they said is written in box B4, they are correct. If what they said is not in that box, they are wrong. If they correctly answer a question the partner must say “Correct” followed by “Hit or Miss” giving them information on if they hit or missed one of their hidden ships. If they are incorrect, the partner simply says “Incorrect” and they must try again before getting any information about that box.
Students keep answering/solving problems and trying to attack their partner’s ships. Remember, it doesn’t alternate turns. Students should be working at the same time and when they are ready to attack they just tell their partner. Once someone has hit all boxes in a ship the person should say “Correct, Hit, Ship Sunk.” Example: If my partner is attacking my 3 box ship and the last box he attacks is C3, I would say “Correct, that’s a hit. You sunk my 3 ship.” That way my partner knows they don’t need to keep solving/answering problems near those and can try somewhere else. The game ends when someone has sunk all their partner’s ships OR when time runs out. Whoever has sunk the MOST ships at the end, wins.
