A new paper by Iman R. Kivi entitled “Bleed-off control on post-injection seismicity in enhanced geothermal systems” has been published in Underground Space. This is a follow up paper to Iman’s research on process understanding of post-injection seismicity in enhanced geothermal systems (EGS) published in the International Journal of Rock Mechanics and Mining Sciences. In this new paper, the effectiveness of well bleed-off for mitigating post-injection seismicity is studied in light of the involved coupled hydromechanical processes. A scenario is highlighted in which not only bleed-off does not prevent seismicity after stopping stimulation, but also it may accelerate its happening. Further research is needed to devise stimulation and post-stimulation protocols that effectively control post-injection seismicity at EGS sites.
