Iman R. Kivi presented his research at the second Caprock Integrity & Gas Storage Symposium (CIGSS) at the Mont Terri Rock Laboratory on 24–25 January 2024 in St-Ursanne, Switzerland. His poster presentation entitled “Experimental study of coupled hydro-chemo-mechanical processes of CO2 injection into a low-permeability sandstone” concerned potential impacts of the state of stress on chemical reactions of CO2 with rock. The symposium also included a short visit of the Mont Terri underground rock laboratory, where several cutting edge decameter-scale experiments of CO2 injection into Opalinus Clay as a representative caprock for geologic carbon storage are carried out. One of the experiments was the CO2 Long-term Periodic Injection Experiment (CO2LPIE), which aims to understand the long-term impact of CO2 on sealing rocks in light of coupled thermo-hydro-mechanical-chemical (THMC) processes. Iman has contributed to the design of this experiment using numerical simulations.
