Introduction from Christian Johnson, Editor-in-Chief of This Month in Energy
2023 was a big year. King Charles III was coronated, the Lionesses reached the final of the Football world cup, and Sir Elton John headlined at Glastonbury. There was Barbenheimer, Nigel Farrage starred on I'm a Celeb, and Prince Harry released his memoir 'Spare'. Its fair to say a lot happened.
It wasn't a quiet year from an climate perspective either. Hopefully, this edition will give you an insight into some of the major events on 2023 and what our team thought of it.
We are extremely lucky to have a special piece from Nick Njopa-Kaba who attended the Student Energy Summit in Abu Dhabi. This month Alice Barclay interviewed someone closer to home, Chris Stokes, Professor in Sea Level, Ice and Climate and he attended COP28!
And if that isn't enough to excite you about this issue, we have two new features!
I am sure a lot (if not all of you) are applying to graduate jobs, internships, and placements. The 'Watts Next?' section will hopefully help direct you in the right direction. The advertised roles have something for everyone! I would like to draw your attention to two roles in particular. A former DUSES member, Ned Dean, is currently in the Corporate Social Responsibility Intern at Axa Investment Managers. If you would like to learn some more about it, I am sure he would be happy to help! Secondly, there is a project opportunity with MyGridGB. The project is run by Durham alumnus Andrew Crossland PhD, who is partnering with DUSES to find students that can contribute to their data analytics or strategy and planning.
The other addition is 'Editor's Energy Essentials'. It is a space where the editors will share something that they think people should know about. It will range from a cool business, to a podcast, to a film. This month, there is an interactive quiz, adapted from the fantastic non-profit organisation called 'Gapminder'. Go and have a look!
As always, we love your feedback, please do send in any suggestions or improvements.
