In the mid-late 70s my St. Louis area rock band had a week's engagement at a rock club out in Illinois somewhere. One of those nights, Iron Butterfly was going to come in and play a set. Club owner sold a lot of tickets for this event.

It depends on how you define prog rock, which is something that I've struggled with, myself. To me, Yes and ELP are definitely and instantly identifiable as prog rock ("Classical Rock" always seemed to be a better term to me, but that's over in my thread so I'll leave it out of this one). Jethro Tull, who seem to have been inducted into the club later on...I'm not so sure about that. Granted, Tull always seemed to appeal to a lot of the same people who liked Yes and ELP, but they always seemed to me to be materially different, somehow.

Maybe this is the best place for a shameless plug! Our now not-so-new new video at is a 40 minute adaptation of T. S. Eliot's "Prufrock" - check it out! And hopefully I'll have something new here this year. ;-)

The premise of this topic applies to me. It may not be valid for you and you may like religious rock music. If so, please explain why you like the music (let's not go into the merits of the message). The premise is valid for me, because I have not, so far, been able to find any religious rock music that I like regardless of the message.

I don't want any debate on the merits of the "message". That's not what this is about. I realize that some people may not like religious rock music because they don't like the message in the songs. But some also associate rock music with drugs, sex and any of a number of bad habits and vices that they think taints religious rock music because it's "rock" music.

As a catholic also, i agree with you. ive never been drawn to christian rock. im not sure why, but this is what i came up with. and it boils down to lyrix, and the singer, nothin to do with the actual instrumentation. i think i just feel disconnected from it. the message may be good, but i dont feel like the person singing is "real". to compare ill use social distortion since theyre my favorite band and have a real emotional affect on me.

I think this is at the crux for me. I've tried at times to write Christian rock that wasn't wimpy but still had the integrity of the message. I don't seem to be able to reconcile the "rebellious, sex/drugs" etc. vibe of rock with the Gospel.

Christian rock sucks, not because of the christian thing but because the rock that is in it sucks as rock. And somehow this lack of taste can be found also in the way the christian feelings are expressed, they sound fake too, there is not respect for rock nor for Christ. Banal rock and banal christianism. 006ab0faaa
