Inanna’s Descent into the Underworld is one part of the Ancient Sumerian Epic of Inanna - Queen of Heaven and Earth. Inanna’s temple was the Heart of Sumerian Culture and she remained at the center of civilization for millenia, even as conquerors, tribes, languages and fashions changed around her.
This Grand Myth examines the eternal cosmic cycles of moving into Darkness and returning to Light. Inanna’s Descent is immediately relevant to the modern experience, though it was written down some 5000 years ago.
Inanna, Queen of Heaven and Earth, answers a call to the land from which none return. Her sister, Ereshkigal, rules the Underworld.
Ok Apocalypse Productions brings to life - and death - Inanna’s story of transformation through original music and artwork, storytelling, dance, poetry and animation. 'Inanna's Descent' features original live music written and performed by Meg Bohrman, artwork by Thatcher Bohrman, choreography by Bonnie Miller and starring Luna Lupkey and Morgana Cooper.
This show is not for the very young.
Inanna’s Descent into the Underworld is an old old story. It was recorded around 5000 years ago in cuneiform by the ancient Sumerians, though the story itself is undoubtedly even older. It tells of Inanna, Queen of Heaven and Earth, and her journey to the Underworld where her sister, Ereshkigal, is Queen.
Much has been written on the interpretation of this myth by scholars, theologians, psychologists, priests and poets. Ok Apocalypse Productions offers a unique interpretation of Inanna, one that is both Ancient and Immediate. We aim to be true to the original poetic text while we reimagine it for contemporary people, like you and me.
And really, it’s just a great story.
OK Apocalypse presents Inanna’s Descent as an offering; an antidote to the modern world of uncertainty, anxiety and disconnection from Nature and the Cosmic Cycles. It tells of Inanna’s fall into darkness, her painful journey, death and rebirth - and her ultimate return to the land of the Sun.
We are living in uncertain times - times when it feels like there is little firm ground to stand on. The center cannot hold. Things fall apart.
Inanna and Ereshkigal’s story reminds us of the greater Universal cycles of movement between opposites: above and below, light and dark, yin and yang, joy and pain, life and death.
This is the dance of Paradox, and when we learn the steps, we become Wise.
The story of Descent lays bare the unavoidable suffering involved in the Transformation process. This is the same process we undergo when we heal our personal and collective trauma. In a world of constant turmoil, Inanna’s story can provide us with a road map, not just of how to suffer the Darkness of Descent, but also how to follow the Light of Return.
Stories go on and on…
There is more to Inanna’s story than we are telling here. In fact, there doesn’t seem to be any end to her story!
I, Meg, first learned about Inanna as part of my education as a Doula and Birth Assistant. Pam England and Birthing From Within teach it as a fundamental for understanding the emotional and psychological transformation that occurs during childbirth.
I shortened and changed some parts of the story, emphasized others. This is artistic license. I like to think that as Goddess of Transformation and Rebirth, Inanna would smile on such Diversity of Creation.
