Okita Souji is, by no mean, a simple pretty flower
That much is obvious among the people who works with her.
The girl is trained in the way of the sword. She's a warrior, first and foremost, who graduated from the school of Edo and proudly stands side by side with her brethren.
Souji never hestates when it comes to battle and the taking of lives - something which earns her admiration and respect from the rest of the corp. At the tender age of 17, she was already amongst the higher-ups of the organization known as Roshigumi. That alone spoke volumes of her personality more than any historical records could
Then...there was him
In comparison, the man she has eyes on is a doctor. While also respected by the villagers, Japan's society revere men who blooms in the battlefield than those lying at the back treating to the wounded. In their eyes, such work is the mark of a coward
He is a rarity on that front. Yet, he never cared. To her great surprise the man seems almost happy to be treating the people in this village
Looking at the two of them, you cannot deny they cannot be anything more than different. Thier jobs are different, their dispositions are different,
Yet, how? Why did Okita feels attracted to this mysterious man known as Dokutah. What is it about him that interest her so much?
In the end, she decided that it does not matter
"Nine hundred seventy six"
All thoughts were discarded from her mind as the young girl focused onward, her concentration focused solely on ignoring the pain and continuing with her improved training regime
"...Nine hundred seventy eight"
Sweats ran down between her eyebrow, glistening in the early sunlight
"....Nine hundred eighty two"
"Nine hundred ninety seven"
Other people walking by the courtyard stares at her. She ignored them in favor of straining her muscle for the next swing
Each slash must be done with not only strength and agility, but also resolve
"Nine hundred ninety eight"
"Nine hundred ninety nine"
"One thousand"
Her sword swung to a stop. Wind rippled in front of her, indicate of the strength behind each strikes she made
Okita wiped the sweat on her brows away as she leaned down on her sword to take a breath. Her arms sored from the constant swinging, but that's what what a good exercise will do to you
What is pain, but a medium for getting stronger?
"Alright everybody, that's enough for today!" The girl called out to them
"Yes, instructor Souji!" The Ronins bellowed. She smiled as they all straightened their postures and shook hands with their partner. Their bare back showed the faint outline of scars received from their first battle.
The last time she'd seen them Okita almost panicked in the midst of battle. But now she is assured it will not result any permanent effects, the girl found herself silently thankful the ambush had happened by night, otherwise the wounds would have been more lethal
She grinned
Well, maybe it's less the injuries themselves but rather the doctor who treated them that made them undergo such swift recovery
"Okita-kun" She swiveled around to meet the gaze of her captain, Kiyokawa Hachiro. Okita's demeanor changed as her back straightened, before curving to a slight bow
"Captain" She greeted curtly
Though he was the elegated Ronin to lead the brigade in protection of the Shogun, something about the man seems off.
Call it gut instinct, but Hachiro gave off the vibe of a poisonous snake to her, as such she has a strong aversion to him whenever they met
"may I have a moment of your time?"
"I really can't decline your offer" She straightened up "After, you are my superior and I am obligated to follow your command"
"That's alright" If he detected something off about her manner, Hachiro didn't show it
"The rest are now almost healed. It would be best if we were to be on the move tomorrow to avoid any further complication" He gestured at the resting men
"Captain, I do not think that is a good idea" She inclined her head in response "The doctor said they needed at least another two days of rest to completely recover, or we might risk the chance of them tearing their wounds in the midst of combat"
"How would a simple doctor who had never experience hardship know anything about us swordsmen?" Hachiro smiled
"Trained or not, they are all human"
Okita's cold words sent a chill down his spine
The smirk on the man's face slowly dropped, replaced by indignant fury
"Then I guess it can't be helped. Maybe if you could persuade the doctor to move with us we'll be set, otherwise they will just have to bear the wounds" He replied in a mocking voice
"Are there no other choices?"
"Our time is too limited for such endeavors, Okita-kun"
Of course, he's right. As a squad of elite guards they could not afford to sacrifice the Shogun's safety for their own comfort
The ambush happened three days ago. The longer their forces remain here, the more chances there are of Japan loyalist attacking them. Okita frowned as she thought
"But, supposedly, if I were to listen to your suggestion and have him travel with the corp to Kyoto, that would not be a problem?"
"You know how having an outsider in our group could compromise the mission, Souji? Invalid"
"If he wants to hinder our objective anyway, Dokutah would have had plenty chances of doing so in the last three days. A simple vile ointment here, a slip of a poison vial there. It does not take much to wipe out our force at their most vulnerable"
"I still do not trust him. The decision is final"
"Or is it?"
the third person spoke up, making the two of them stopped
The voice came from the opposite direction, just behind their back. Two heads turn around to assess the newcomer
Another man leaned at the door frame to their training ground.
The sun shone down, its light reflecting off the black robe he wore. The attire is in a similar shade as its wearer's hair, bangs of black drizzled down his forehead in a essy manner, giving the speaker the impression of a wild man
Hijikata Toshizo blinked
With light, soundless steps, he strolled toward them. The man stopped just before Okita, his eyes analyzing her from above
The difference in height is indeed staggering. Then again she wasn't known as the shortest member in the Roshigumi for nothing
"What is it,Hijikata-san?"
"I agree with Okita's suggestion" The giant of a man grunted "Having the doctor treat us for a few days, then stay with us until Kyoto have their own benefits. In case of another battle we can rely on him to take care of the other members"
"It's still too dangerous. You can't possibly-"
"Oh, is our commander getting scared of a normal doctor?"
Hijikata's sharp retort cut him off. Okita watched with an open mouth as the larger man's brutal words seemingly pierced through Hachiro's
"You. How dare you say that to your superior?"
"My apologies. But if I recalled correctly, aren't you the one who first propose that to him...only to get rejected afterward?"
The man's face reddened slightly in anger at that humiliating memory, but soon turned into a smirk
"I guess you get your answer then. If I, the commanding figure of the entire group, cannot entice that sham of a doctor into recruitment, then what chances do you have?"
"Higher than you, that's for sure" Okita cut in with a lighhearted tone, her face morphed to a beaming smile "As long as we don't get offended and insult his position like a rabid dog, the man should at least consider our offer"
"Souji"
"Courteousnes is part of the Hagakure's teaching, after all. Even if you can't simply be a proper Samurai, surely the leader of trained men must have a decent temperament when it comes to negotiation? I suppose the talk with him must have failed for a reason"
That's the mistake Hachiro made
He treated Dokutah as any prideful Ronin would. Disregarding his position as saver of lives and spat on his perception of the man's effort. No man of the sword would do that, and for him to be so unappreciative of what the doctor had done for them with underpaid fees-
Why does she felt the urge to cut him down for that?
Cut the ungrateful rat down. Cut. Cut. Cut. Cut until nothing remain
Cut until his blood flowed down the street
Cut until-...
Okita blinked.
Somewhere along the line, Hachiro's face had turned pale
Aside from them, Hijikata's eyebrow rose. A warning sign. Her grip on the blade loosened
"Anyway, rest assured that all your worries are for naught" She smiled broadly, the uncaring attittude from before returning "I'm sure a calm talk will smoothen things out just fine, so until then please withold your judgement"
She grabbed her coat and don them on. Walking past the two men, she gave them a wave over her shoulder
"Okita-san's daishouri awaits!"

The bird's chirping and leaves swaying in the wind is the scenery that greeted me as I peered out the window.
Of course, the calming sight is in contrast with my apprehensive mood as of this moment
"You know" I started "It is not necessary of you to come and visits me here everyday"
Now that you mention it, isn't today suppose to be their last?
Across from me, the woman hummed. She then grinned
"Are you saying you don't enjoy my company?"
"I never said anything like that. Still, it would be queer for the strongest swordsman in the entire division to visit a lonely doctor like me? After all, all your men has already left just yesterday" I tapped my ink pen on the paper
Treating some patients in the last few days is enough for me to finally advance one last time, earning yet another level in the [Healing] section
But then again I had yet to learn anything useful about the system itself rather than the fact that it can grant me supernatural powers. It was supposed to be called a Gamer systen, if I recall correctly?
Shaking my head, i turned back to
"Well?"
"That is indeed the case" She scratched her head "But you know, I've been thinking. Maybe it's a good idea for you to follow us until Kyoto"
I frowned. However, I decided to give her the benefits of the doubt and motioned for her to continue
"Some, if not a large majority of our men has still not healed from their wounds. But our leader insisted on continuing nonetheless, as we are already behind schedule with the escort as it is" Okita smiled "Naturally, there's a compromise to that"
"You want me to come with you, is that right?" I narrowed my eyes further "My answer still stays the same"
"Naturally" She replied without missing a beat, that same smile still present "If you leave this village there would be no one to tend to the sick. It is in your nature to save as much people as you can"
Saving people, huh? Just like a hero of justice would...
I looked away
No matter, it was a long time ago anyway
"Just get to the point"
"The point is, you can save a lot more people by coming with us" She said seriously "The Tokugawa shogun's meeting with the Tenno is one that will decide the fate of the country. Depending on the decision reached, rebellion may rise and many people will have to die as a result"
"Unfortunately, I do not see why you would bring this up to me" I sighed "I already rejected your leader before. Wouldn't it be simple to...just hire another?"
"Time wouldn't allow it" Was her short and simple answer
I resist the urge to palm my face at Okita's stubborness
"Fine then. Can you at least give me one more day to prepare? I'll just pack my equipment"
"I'll see about that with the others, but sure!"
As she stood up from her seat and prepared to depart, i looked at Okita one last time. With her robe swaying in the wind, the girl's happy humming reached my ears in the bright morning like a whisper of things to come
How can a person be so chirpy at time, I wonder
It almost made me forget about the true killer hiding underneath, so similar to some of the patients I've received in the past
Ah well. At least I haven't given her a reason to murder me yet

Now that she was gone, I decided to take a look at my skill
