KHONKAEN SMART TRAVEL CALENDAR - October
Tradition
Month 11 (October): Bun Ok Phansa (End of Buddhist Lent Festival)
Bun Ok Phansa marks the end of the Buddhist Lent and is a time when monks are allowed to give and receive constructive criticism among themselves. In the morning, people make merit by offering alms to monks. In some areas, a special sweet called Khao Thip (celestial rice) is prepared for the monks. In the evening, candlelight processions (vien tian), cultural performances, or—in riverside areas—the Lai Ruea Fai (Illuminated Boat Procession) take place. The illuminated boats are floated down the river as an offering to the Buddha and sacred spirits, and it is believed the light carries away suffering and misfortune.
