1: Gradient Scavenger Hunt!
Value Challenge #1: This one comes from the Art of Education. When we first learn about value, we generally work in grayscale, or perhaps with a monochromatic color scheme. The next step is to work with value using multiple colors, and this is where it can become more challenging. This activity will ask you to perceive value as a color blind person might.
One way to see how the values of different hues relate to one another is through photography. Find and arrange objects of different colors from the lightest value to the darkest value. Then, snap a photo using a tablet, phone, or other digital camera. After you take the photo, check to see how you did by making the photo black and white. Arrange both photos using Photoshop or use this free photo merging app online and upload them as a .jpg.
Finally, select one color and desaturate the rest of your image using the technique in the tutorial.
2: Layering Value- Depth
Value Challenge #2: You have three options for this "Layering: Depth" project, each is a bit more difficult than the next:
1. Follow these steps to create the illusion of depth with value. Here is a video that shows most of the steps. Have fun with this, try adding some unique elements of your own like these below:
2. Alternative Monochromatic Vector Art:
3. "Shadow Box"project: (you will need supplies from Amazon, Hobby Lobby, or another craft store):
